Inside the Tanks Restoration Special: M4 Sherman

Commanders!

Around the world, tank museums display vintage war machines that appear to be in pristine condition. However, this is only possible through countless hours of restoration work—not just to the vehicle's exterior, but to the engine and interior details as well.

Although the M4 Sherman was the medium tank used the most by the U.S. and their allies in World War II, putting one together more than eight decades later is a daunting task. Join Richard "The Challenger" Cutland as he visits Gavin Barlow and William Bannister at the Tank Museum in Bovington for a look at the only running Sherman M4A4 in the U.K. Find out what it took for Armoured Engineering to restore this vehicle from a "range wreck" (used in target practice) to factory-new condition.

The M4 Sherman is the last in our three-part Restoration Special series on Inside the Tanks (you can also check out our videos on the M3 Stuart and M24 Chaffee). If you're curious about what it takes to maintain and restore these war machines, take a look at our Behind the Scenes of The Tank Museum: Restoration Team Interview.
